In you do your web using php in a cheap Linux server, comunicating with the IBM i, the result will be worst than green screen. Besides, cheap Linux servers do not scale well. You need Linux mainframes.
I can see your opinions are based in experince with others platforms, that you extrapolate to the IBM, not valid.
With Apache, RPG, SQL, my P9, having only one core activated, can prossess over a hundred transactions every second at peack time. I think scale will not be a problem.
