IMO, if your developers are adding a field to a table and having to
recompile 100 programs, you're doing it wrong in the first place.

Like most places, there are many things that could/should be improved.
I'm not really short of ideas or experience, my whole career has been on
IBM midrange machines starting on the S/36 in 1984.
But they aren't my developers and they aren't my machines and it's not my
money.

As a contractor I offer my best advice, but ultimately it's up to my
clients to spend time and money where they see fit.
They have their own budgets, projects, timetables and priorities.

I'm hired for a few months for a specific project - in this particular case
to develop interfaces between their legacy system and Microsoft Business
Central.
At the end of the project my work is done and I leave.
I've tried to introduce new best practices and tools where I can, but
usually my sphere of influence is limited to my own projects.
I have no authority over other developers or projects.

So yes, it can be frustrating but it is what it is.
After a bad day I usually go write some Python code which usually makes me
smile again.
I'm going to do that now :-)

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, and for the link.
best regards,
Craig
