Hi Duane

No one has mentioned using emulators - with either ACS or Access for IBM i, you can map various actions to any key sequence - I see a host function called Alternate Cursor is done using Ctrl-F11 in ACS. And you can assign any sequence to run macros, etc.

There are APIs (EHLLAPI is maybe the right spelling for what I'm thinking of) that also give you functionality such as pulling what is at a certain position on the screen.

You might want to write your own emulator with your own functionality, or wrap what you want around the existing one and bundle it.

At least 1 product, Profound Logic, has the ability not only to scrape 5250, but also to add web-only functionality to a former green screen - that result is still running in an RPG environment but cannot be displayed as a green screen.

Now once you've done that, you might write something in PHP, node.js, or other language that does web nicely, then you can have anything you want, as described.

Basically, so long as you are thinking 5250, you have some hoops - Profound have found a way that still keeps things in RPG that uses 5250 plus. Then there is the approach to do .Net for Windows, ASP.net, PHP, or something else to do the presentation over the data - 5250 is, in one way of saying it, just a set of rules for standard presentation of characters only.

Just thinkin' early on a Monday!

I tend to agree with Booth, but I'm not familiar with all the circumstances. It has happened in my current shop that multiple options sometimes warrant the need for excessive functions beyond the 24 limit. And the screen is quite busy.

Many times the "OP" don't know/understand the limitations and restrictions of a Green Screen, having worked so much in the Microsoft/Mac worlds. When faced with the challenge of trying to assist with a solution, they can sometimes adjust to a compromise.

What options besides a Green Screen environment are available (if any)? Any chance of conversion to a web-interface?

Is it possible that a secondary look-alike screen could be developed that has the capability of all new options for the same F-keys which would be toggled to-and-fro based on the F-24? Maybe not the best solution, but workable.

Hello Booth,

An underlying design issue seems more significant though. if the
screen needs more than 24 F-keys that is a pretty reliable indicator
that way too much is going on that screen; It most likely needs to be
broken down into 3 or more screens
That also was crossing my mind, but I hesitated, because that wasn't what the OP asked for. ;-)
