Actually, you can specify a host variable in the order by. It is legal. It just would be the same for every row selected, so it wouldn't do much as sort criteria unless it was used in a calculation. So it is unlikely to be what is desired here.

If you are sorting on a case statement result, it can make sense to say what leg of the case statement to use.

If none of the 0001-01-01 rows are being selected, it may make sense to look at the date formats both the SQL (set option datfmt=*ISO) and the RPG program (use the hspec) are using. And check if there are any errors on the statements.

Booth, you cannot specify a Host Variable (:TIMESTAMP) on the ORDER BY
clause of static, embedded SQL. This might have some bearing on your
second issue. This limitation is one reason why some folk use dynamic SQL.

As to your first issue, without seeing the remainder of your SQL
statement, it is difficult to suggest a reason.

Hope this helps.
Brian.

I have a file with a timestamp field which quite often has a value

order for that timestamp.

First issue: Only records greater than 0001-01-01 are being returned.

Second issue: no records are returned if I use "order by :timestamp desc"
