We use the following collection of standard auditing columns in
our tables (plus extended indicators to control their use) and they are
completely reliable.

,Added_By_User For Column AddByUsr VarChar(18) Not Null
Default User
,Added_By_Program For Column AddByPgm VarChar(10)
,Added_Timestamp For Column AddTs Timestamp Not Null
Default Current_Timestamp
,Changed_By_User For Column ChgByUsr VarChar(18) Not Null
Default User
,Changed_By_Program For Column ChgByPgm VarChar(10)
,Changed_Timestamp For Column ChgTs Timestamp Generated
Always
For Each Row On Update As Row Change Timestamp Not Null

By the way... We don't use these timestamps for uniqueness. We
only use them so that we know when a row was added and last modified. The
timestamp format is as follows:

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.NNNNNN

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
