For example, for a 10-character field that can be sent to the screen
as
blanks but must be returned as non-blank and can have any keyboard
value

in it -- including embedded blanks:

A FIELD 9 B 5 10DSPATR(MDT)
A RANGE('¢' '9999999999')

That works great, even if I don't understand what DSPATR(MDT) is doing.
While trying to figure it out, I stumbled on COMP(NE ' ') instead of the

RANGE() keyword, which also works, still needing the DSPATR(MDT)
keyword.

Ah, did not know about the COMP keyword. That is definitely
better -- especially in terms of the error message generated by the 5250
controller. ;-) But, it is true that there are an awful lot of 5250
keywords to try and keep track of and then remember. MDT turns on the
modified data tag associated with the field so that the 5250 controller
thinks the user modified the field even when they didn't.

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
