Somebody from the anti-Cycle crowd derided The Cycle for being 45 (or
so) years old.
Some 45 years ago, a great many people in the U.S. (but not in Europe or
East Asia) were convinced that the whole gamut of passenger trains, from
streetcars to intercity, were obsolete: the price of airline tickets was
dropping, and gas was pennies a gallon. Railroads couldn't abandon their
passenger service, or cities their trolley lines, fast enough.
Now, between smog, global warming, and $3 gas, Amtrak ridership has been
steadily growing for years, and cities can't build new trolley lines
fast enough. All this because the greenest and most energy-efficient
form of mechanized transportation is (and has been for two centuries)
the kind that runs on rails.
Just because a technology is old does not mean that it's obsolete. And
sometimes the best tool for the job is the oldest one in your toolbox.
