Effectively you are correct.

The "compiler" only sees the source - so it will internally resolve everything it can.

When producing the module it creates import requirements for any functions it could not resolve internally.

Then during the bind process (CRTPGM), the import requirements are matched against any exports found in the modules and service programs that are referenced.

The only real difference between those imports satisfied by modules and those satisfied by service programs is that the module(s) is physically copied into the PGM object - the service program ones are resolved at run time and never "glued in".

Barbara,

Thank you for your clarification!

When you mention "module" I am assuming you are referring to an actual *MODULE object, and also the temporary *MODULE object that is created by the CRTBNDRPG command.

Is it correct to say that the compiler will always look to the program source for a function definition (subprocedure), then any other *MODULES that are compiled with that program, and then finally any service programs (specified individually or in a binding directory) for the location of a specific function, and stops looking once it finds the first occurrence?

Thank you again!

Doug
