I can read an SQL select into the DS array, or load data, validate it and write the whole array in one SQL insert.

Qualified is not relevant to the discussion Booth other than the fact that it is required for a DS array. But the simple answer is so that I can have n=more than one field with the same name and that the source, parenthood and location of the data is clear.

This is a DS array.

D myDSArray ds dim(99) Qualified.
D item1
D item2
D etc

What you had was an unnamed array (although it could have had a name) with a group field array (data) and the group field was overlaid with individual fields numbr1 and numbr2. Because they overlay the group field they are automagically arrays on their own right.

The OP wanted a DS array - for whatever reason.

I believe you but I don't understand you. What is the win he will gain by using a DS array? I admit, I have never understood the win/gain of the qualified keyword.

That works Booth - but it doesn't meet the OP's original requirement that it be a DS array. You're using a group field defined as an array.

fwiw, this code:

D ds
D data dim(100)
D numbr1 11s 2 inz(1) overlay(data)
D numbr2 11s 2 inz(2) overlay(data: *next)
/FREE
nField = %xfoot(numbr1);
wString = %editc(nField: 'N');
dsply wString;
nField = %xfoot(numbr2);
wString = %editc(nField: 'N');
dsply wString;

gave me this result:
DSPLY 100.00
DSPLY 200.00
