Two issues with scroll bars sometimes are troublesome.
One of course is the three columns needed on the right side to display the subfile. The good news is that showing the scrollbar is a one-word change in the DSPF (unless the SFLSIZE keyword is some arbitrarily too-high value).
The other issue programmers sometimes get tripped up on is that the SFLSIZE needs to be correct. (Just making the subfile size some arbitrarily too-high number compiles and works, but if you use the actual subfile size then the program can do the math correctly and make the slider on the scrollbar the right proportion compared to the subfile size, and also place the slider correctly on the scrollbar so the user gets two visual signals about the relative size of the subfile, and where s/he is in the subfile.

If you're looking for some sort of "where am I in the subfile" indication
(and absolute page number is just an idea toward that end), I have heard
suggested hear in other posts that scroll bars help the user visualize sort
of where they are in the scrolling. If you can afford the horizontal space,
I found it useful once.
