If you're looking for some sort of "where am I in the subfile" indication
(and absolute page number is just an idea toward that end), I have heard
suggested hear in other posts that scroll bars help the user visualize sort
of where they are in the scrolling. If you can afford the horizontal space,
I found it useful once.
