I don't think there's anything wrong with having the compiler send a
warning
message if you do certaiin things that *could* give problems at
runtime.
After all, that's why we have the GENLVL parameter for the generation
commands. Moving large numeric fields into small numeric fields is an
obvious choice.

It's not the message; it's the reliance. It's the whole "what good is a
compiler if it doesn't catch this" attitude. Sorry it was misplaced grief.
But since I'm here, I still hold that there should be a clear delineation of
potentials to catch and those to ignore. I doubt that anyone would ever
come up with a delineation that meets expectations, since we are such
individuals. Best to leave it like it is, IMO.
