But you're quite happy with twice as many tests on %EOF instead of a priming read? Let's see, the priming read form of loop has no additional run-time overhead therefore must be more efficient (i.e., fewer tests, less CPU, less resource usage) than a test of EOF at the start of every loop iteration plus a test on EOF part way through each loop iteration.
