Please tell me that you didn't write a cycle program in Free form.
In an effort to demonstrate a positive use for combining the cycle and
free form code, I happen to be working on a matching record program
right now. I converted it to RPG IV via CVTRPGSRC, which did a
creditable job. As a long time RPG programmer, I find the conversion of
3 indicators per line to one a bit noisy.
My changes have added subprocedures which use /free code. Because of
the local variable scope, I can guarantee no side effects to the
existing (working) mainline. I left all the rest of the code alone,
because it works as-is. That means there are program described files,
the cycle, matching record and free form all in the same source member.
There's no way re-writing this would have been faster than adding the
subprocedures, and there's no way rewriting it to avoid the cycle and MR
would have been low impact compared to adding the subprocedures.
