No, it's not. It's a sign that the programmers who made a particular
_web_ browser didn't target it to business applications, but to browsing
the web. That is, after all, still a primary function of a web browser,
isn't it?

Actually, no it isn't. The original browsers were designed to browse static
data. There was only the Internet, not extranets or intranets. The use of
the tool has grown far past the "primary function" of the browser.

Remember that "web" apps aren't really the web at all, and are
a relatively new beast. You are probably right that there is a market for
an HTML renderer that doesn't have any of the usual web browsing functions
at all (location bar, forward/backward buttons, home button, etc.).

Yeah, it's a browser with the back button turned off. And in fact, most of
those things CAN be turned off, you just have to jump through hoops to do
it. And in reality it's only a visual thing anyway; the keyboard shortcuts
are still there.

That
doesn't mean that web browsers that don't do that are weak, it just means
they're not designed for that task. I don't say my knife is weak because
it's not good for putting food in my mouth - that's the job of my fork.

Again, all these things can be done, just not easily or completely. They
added the features, just not completely or consistently.

It means that, as usual, the folks who create web tools either don't know or
don't care about business applications. There's a profound chasm between
the world of web surfers and the world of business programming, and so far
the browser has yet to make the leap.

And it would be SOOOO easy. Allow an application to easily control all the
chrome for a window via simple STANDARD JavaScript commands, and make sure
that keyboard shortcuts honor those settings.

Of course, the fact that the major browsers refuse to standardize on
something as basic as their Document Object Model is an even clearer
indication that they're not actually worried about the business community.
At least Microsoft tries; the Gecko engine is a joke.
