There's your problem
Chain FileInQuestion;
Update RecordOfFileInQuestion;
Chain OtherFileA;
Chain OtherFileB;
Chain OtherFileC;
Update RecordOfFileInQuestion;  // again
You have two updates against 1 chain.  The first update released the lock. 
 You have to rechain it.

Straight from the RPGLE Reference:
Consecutive UPDATE operations to the same file or record are not valid. 
Intervening successful read operations must be issued to position to and 
lock the record to be updated.
