Then why program for this situation? Simply perform the following
before
opening the file in the program. If it fails, you've got issues. ADDPFCST FILE(MYFILE) TYPE(*UNQCST) KEY(KEY1 KEY2)
There are a couple of reasons that I am not doing this. 1) This is an existing file with a long history. There would be a fair amount of work in cleaning up some of the old cruft, which I can't justify at this point in time. As much as bad data makes my skin crawl, I don't think it is really having a detrimental effect on business operations at present and probably won't in the near future. I have other projects that have a better 'bang for my buck'. 2) I don't know much about constraints. I would be willing to learn, but once again the 'business value' probably isn't there at this point in time. 3) Constraints are not standard operating procedure in our shop. I sometimes wish they were, but we just aren't there yet. Like many shops, we are taking some solid steps toward modernization, but haven't got all the way there yet. Thanks for the tip nonetheless. I hope at some point in the future I can let the database do the work for me, but not today. ##################################################################################### Attention: The above message and/or attachment(s) is private and confidential and is intended only for the people for which it is addressed.
