Used primarily by calls to API's. Few people outside of that realm used them. IBM examples pretty much define them as binary when they really should be integer. RTM for more.
I believe the IBM API docs/examples/copy members use the B data type in RPG IV because they did a straight conversion from RPG III, which only had the B data type.
