Jerry, I'm not going to ask how you knew this bit of trivia. :-\ I couldn't > find it in the RPG IV manual. See the description of I-specs columns 21-22 (record identifying indicator) where it says: "The specification of record identifying indicators in these positions is optional but, if present, follows the rules as described under "Program Described Files" on page 318 earlier in this chapter, except for look-ahead specifications, which are not allowed for an externally described file." And yes, I did find this out .when converting some RPG II code which used both look-ahead and matching records. Not only that, I'll admit that I had authored the original RPG II code for it back in 1982 or earlier. Doug
