I need to be able to determine if a physical file is a data or source

*SRC or *DATA is a file attribute rather than an object attribute. You need to use a file description interface to get this information. The file definition header section of the QDBRTVFD API will give you this information. The MBR0100 format of the QUSRMBRD API will also give this information and is easier to process than QDBRTVFD. You could also run DSPFD to an outfile and process that or call a CL program to run RTVMBRD and return the FILETYPE.
