I think any business that's used the iSeries and predecessors like System 36/38 probably has some non RPGIV source. The compiled objects will continue to run (I hope) and when a program needs to be modified it can be converted to RPGIV. We've converted a lot of our older stuff to RPGIV exactly that way. Program needs new feature, convert it and add new stuff. This could be a problem for shops that don't use RPGIV at all, but since the conversion is transparent and no one is forced to use RPGIV features I don't see it as a big deal. Is there anything besides FREE that's not supported in RPGIV? I've seen RPGIV programs written in the last year that use the CASEQ and COMP opcodes not to mention chains of if-goto that could have been in a select statement. Left hand indicators still occur, but rarely. You can write programs that make full use of the cycle in RPGIV. A couple of months ago I modified one that did. When C++ was relatively new, there were a lot of books out that showed sample code that was procedural C that used a few C++ features. > -----Original Message----- > From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx > [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Hauser, Birgitta > Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2005 5:12 AM > To: 'rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx' > Subject: RE: ?Withdrawal of RPG/400 compiler? > > >Collin wrote: > >Does anyone else still have RPG programs they havent converted? > > About 60% of our programs are still in RPGIII. > We only convert what we have to change. > We do not see any advantage to convert to RPGIV, if we do not > redesign the programs. > Converting to RPGIV, even without changing anything, requires > additional tests. > > All new development is written in RPGIV considering the ILE concepts. > > Birgitta > > > > Mit freundlichen Grüßen > > > > i.A.
