If you use RTNCSRLOC(*RECNAME &RCD &FLD) in the DSPF record format in question, &RCD contains the format name and &FLD contains the field name. This way, the screen format can be completely rearranged and the RPG code doesn't have to be touched. It can continue to refer to the actual field name in the prompting subroutine. Of course, the ability to include the field's label in the "promptable" area is lost with this technique. The user must place the cursor directly in the data field in question. The only problem with this approach, and I admit it's a minor one, is if the user has moved the cursor off the field by a character or two. If this has happened, the the prompt won't be displayed and the cursor will go back to the first field on the screen. I personally prefer to use internally defined cursor positions in lieu of some way to identify the field header the way I can using HLPARA. Donald R.
