I would beg to differ. I feel that if you have a clear understanding of how to prototype java classes (it's quite simple really; all in the manual) and creating a D- spec to define a new data type for each class, then it's just a matter of compiling with a /COPY directive to include the prototypes and data types ( either directly or via a service program) thereby making the java classes available as callable procedures just like any other procedure. V5R2 makes it all much simpler by starting the JVM automatically for you and there's no need to end it anyway, if you set your classpath via the SystemDefault.properties. You may (or may not) be surprised to find that the JDK14 shipped with OS400 already contains most of the packages you need anyway. Sent: Thursday, 2 September 2004 8:11 a.m. To: 'RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries' Subject: Java/RPG interface We need to implement a RPG-ILE never ending process (NEP) that reads data from a file, determines what action that needs to happen based on the file and then call a java program (methods) that will invoke different soap methods to accomplish the necessary action. Our desire is to have the NEP be in RPG since that is the majority of the programmer base in the company. The question is how difficult is it to call java programs (methods) from RPG. Based on the information I am receiving it is not easy for RPG to call complex Java programs (methods) that have many classes. We are also getting feedback that the JVM does not stay "Active" and may end at any time. From some of the discussions on this list my understanding that from V5R2 on you can not intentionally end a JVM let alone have it end arbitrarily. Any information would be appreciated.
