Thanks Scott. I seem to have skipped a couple steps in my thorough explanation. (I should also say that my original question has been answered as you did below, with the open close open sequence. Not all of my posts seem to get out.) <snip> Okay, I'm going to just forget your previous statement that you're reading the file and assume that you're writing the file ;) <snip> I am reading a file and writing out to a second file. The second file contents should be the same as the first except for the negative numbers. (When I changed this using Word Pad, CPYFRMSTMF then correctly interpreted the number and copied to our iSeries file.) Once I made changes suggested by Rick and jlingga, I can get the file to be written. Now, however, my record with the negative number is not copied. Maybe the translation does something to the negative. I will look at your article as soon as I can.
