I wonder whether this is a (bad) way of deciding what kind platform the code is running on? Maybe they are assuming that "ABC", when moved to a numeric field, will only equal 123 on a certain platform, i.e. one where ABC= x'C1C2C3' and x'C1C2C3' can be interpreted as 123 and equivalent to x'F1F2F3'. I never worked on anything prior to the S/38, but maybe this was a way of, for example, distinguishing between a S/38 and aS/36 or S/34??? Or did this code ever run on 370?
