Edit words, going back at least as far as RPG II when I learned it on the S/32, have a special case rule where you can insert an *extra* leading zero in front of the first blank, in order to achieve leading zeros for all digits. For example, a field of 5 digits with two decimals could be: '0bbb.bb-' where b is a blank. Normally this would look like 6 replaceable positions, but when used with a 5 digit field is construed to mean a leading zero should not be surpressed. Doug
