Technically, neither of these work since figurative constants aren't allowed with the catenation operator. Ideally, you should have some solution that's independent of both the target of the assignment aand the size of the numeric variable.

Technically, if you want to mess with someone's mind, the book says:
*ON/*OFF *ON is all ones ('1' or X'F1'). *OFF is all zeros ('0' or X'F0'). Both are only valid for character fields.


So, therefore
                 EvalR alpha = *off + %Char(numeric);
should work.
