This can be accomplished without an edit word using this statement:

EvalR alpha = '000000000' + %Char(numeric);

Oh yeah, I forgot about the EVALR solution.

Actually, in general, the solution may differ depending on the particular needs of the application. For example, that particular EVALR solution (as well as variations on edit code 'X') fails for negative values.
