Yes, from what I've seen you have to do it that way.  But I'm new to it also.

      * select records to the create summary file EDISLSFS
     c/exec sql
     c+ declare c1 cursor for
     c+ select * from edislsfc
     c+    where  wksea = '8' and wkend <= :purgeDate#
     c+    order by wksol, wkcstj, wksty, wkclr
     c/end-exec

      * open cursor
     c/exec sql
     c+ open c1
     c/end-exec

      * fetch cursor
     c/exec sql
     c+ fetch c1 into :ediSales
     c/end-exec

into a record format
or a data structure which is externally defined as the file being fetched?
