But doesn't V5R2 deal with being able to convert character to number the way people used move? If that's the case the case then that's all I need. Until we move to V5R2 I'll write a procedure or better yet, if I want to get around that TIME issue I talked about, have a global variable in a copy book called jobTime and be done with it. If I want, I'll use MOVE in there <vbg>. I hated the old cryptic MOVEs anyway. Searching to see what people were moving and chopping off in their own clever way. As was pointed out previously, I'd much rather see a %subst() of exactly what is going on. >>I just hate that the compiler team (and evidentlhy a lot of >>people on this list) thinks it's their job to force me to decide between the >>two. I would never think to tell someone what they had to code in, but at the same time I don't want to be 'held back' because the programmer next to me can't find the time to do the 2 hour learning curve to discover /free. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Pluta [mailto:joepluta@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, April 28, 2003 11:33 AM To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: RE: Free Form RPG Opinions Wanted > From: Bartell, Aaron L. > > I just don't see how we can even be disagreeing on this point when you > constantly bring up that you have written all these books and > software. It just doesn't make sense. . . You always miss the point, Aaron: I have no problem with new capabilities, my big problem is with the loss of the old capability, namely the MOVE instruction. It doesn't make sense that I should have to lose the capability of MOVE in order to get the features of free-format, that's all I'm saying. And I'm saying that with a little bit of effort, IBM could give us the best of both worlds. I have no problem with new features. I also have no problems with the old features. I just hate that the compiler team (and evidentlhy a lot of people on this list) thinks it's their job to force me to decide between the two. And no, mixed-mode is not an acceptable strategic alternative.
