If your job doesn't require Java then maybe you don't need to use it, but it sure is a heck of a lot easier to do certain things in Java, pretty much anything web services related, than in RPG. Try parsing XML in RPG and you will know what I mean. What if you were a Java programmer and the RPG prof couldn't get the program to function correctly because he didn't put a K on the file spec to signify it was a keyed file. Would you have given up on RPG;-) >I'm lazy, I like not having to worry about paths and all the overhead. I hear you on this one. It was a pain to learn what the terms meant, but in reality it is very similar to what you are used to as an RPG programmer. A classpath is nothing more than a library list, for the most part anyway. As far as overhead goes, you can do away with some of that as you learn new techniques, emphasis on "some";-) Aaron Bartell -----Original Message----- From: Mike Haston ** Data [mailto:MJH@jny.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 10:37 AM To: rpg400-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: Alternate Platform for RPG Not to add to getting off track, but I gave up on Java after I took an introductory course at a well know university and the guru/consultant/professor, who refused to explain much to the non-OO programmers, couldn't get one of his example programs to compile on half the classes PC's. I'm lazy, I like not having to worry about paths and all the overhead. -----Original Message----- From: Bartell, Aaron L. Just wanted to comment on this even though I think you mostly said it in jest. Java performs very well when it has all of its classes loaded and when you don't have to start the JVM. You can achieve this on the iSeries by using Tomcat or another application server, WAS maybe. . . The first call is going to be the only one that is slow and after that it performs as well as RPG. I have not done any sophisticated timing on this, so it is based on human perception and not actual programmatical time-testing. I agree that calling Java directly from RPG is incredibly slow though. I have yet to find a way to make this happen faster.
