Perhaps you would benefit the most by converting your text-book subfile example to ILE/RPG, and then using the interactive debugger to "step through" the actual running of the program. This would greatly increase your understanding of the concepts involved, and you will probably find many answers to your problems faster (and more satisfying.) By watching the code execute line by line and checking the values of variables and records retrieved, you will find that subfiles aren't really that mysterious at all, and once you grasp the basics you'll be able to write one from scratch on a moments notice (but, keep a template handy anyway -- why re-invent the wheel every time!)
