I agree completely, Mark. <Rant Mode> *ON IBM should be making it's money from selling machines and operating systems that customers demand because the best applications run on them. Not from selling developer tools. Developers are the ones who create the applications that create the demand for the machines. Fleecing developers is like the dairy farmer trying to make a few bucks on the side selling barbeque. Sooner or later, he's gonna run out of milk. If all the languages and all the tools and small one-user machines had been made available to developers at little or no cost (like windoze and unix have always been), then all the kids, and all the college students, and all the independent developers, as well as the larger vendors would all now be developing on OS/400 (and the clients would have been running on OS/2) because it's the best system to run on. And, AS400's would be selling by the millions! Don't they ever learn? Linux ain't popular 'cause it's better. It's popular 'cause it's FREE. duh..... <Rant Mode> *OFF Oh, well, it's Friday and a hurricane is coming.....time to batten down. > Newer technology is great > (i.e. web, Java), but along w/ the good, we get a healthy dose of > additional costs. Now before you tell me that there's no free lunch, I > think that IBM *should* make money. I just think that their marketing > model is antiquated and doesn't fly in today's M$ way of doing business > that most shops are used to (in short - get as many people as you can > hooked on it, then get the upgrade and maintenance fees.) > > -mark > > ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ This message originates from Lincare Holdings Inc.
