I'd just like to add that I agree this sort of access would be a good thing, and I like some of the suggested codings in F-specs that have been presented. I don't think that a solution needs to handle every possible case -- in fact, I think it would be _extremely_ useful to have a simple way of dealing with plain text files (that supported common formats such as tab-delimited, CSV, etc.). Having to define record structures within the program doesn't bother me, and neither does having to make sure that the file(s) accessed adhered to that format. What I would gain (IMHO) is an easy way of transferring data to and from PC-based applications: my RPG programs could put it on the IFS for them to find, and they could put it on the IFS for my programs to find. I think that would be great! Mike Naughton Senior Programmer/Analyst Judd Wire, Inc. 124 Turnpike Road Turners Falls, MA 01376 413-863-4357 x444 mnaughton@juddwire.com
