Ron,

I'd say it wan't a competent school. <g>

But in a shop where there are scores -- if not hundreds -- of programs using the
cycle, then if you can't or won't maintain them you aren't competent for the
job. Period. Unless you are willing to change.

My point is that the cycle is *easy* to use -- when done correctly -- and
anybody who can learn to use the newer, welcome features of RPG IV can surely
learn to understand how to maintain the example cycle program I posted.

And you convienently ignored my real request. I posted a sample cycle program
with very simple requirements, and asked for equivalent Do-It-Yourself code for
the sake of comparison.

You didn't show me how you'd do it -- so I'll ask again. Since you can't follow
the code I posted, I'll spell out the requirements another way. Show me a
mainline which performs this simple task:

  - Reads every record in a file called Master
  - Detects changes in a hierarchy of fields with this precendence:
      - Division (most important)
      - Zone
      - Territory
      - Salesman
  - You must be able to print headings or perform calcs at a new group
  - You must be able to print totals or perform cals at the end of a group
  - You must have the contents of all fields still available during "totals"
(eg you must be able to print the contents from the group just ending,
not just print "Total" followed by some accumulated totals)

Nothing fancy. Just a simple, straight-forward common request. I've shown you
how I would code it -- even today -- and am seriously asking you how you'd do
the same thing.

You are missing my whole point. Go ahead and show me how you do it. I'd rather
compare actual code to rhetoric.

Doug
