V5R1 dropped the old trick of TGTRLS(V3R2M0) to support these older
machines. V5R1 only goes back to V4R4M0.

If the individual locations cannot afford to upgrade then maybe removing
these machines and consolidating them onto the central location is a better
option. We've got a whale of a central machine. Everyone pays their fair
share. We've discovered the following benefits:
-Lower maintenance costs
-Faster response time - the higher speed processor more than made up for
the comm line
-Reduced down time. We bring the remote's library only down long enough to
do their part of the backup. Not for the whole duration of everyone's
backup.
-Lower leasing costs. You pay more for leasing multiples. Anyone who
purchases a 400 needs to go study accounting. You can't amortize the
machine before you should upgrade. You can guess that you purchased a
machine large enough to run your current applications, allowing for growth
in your business. Surprise - your applications change! Now you're doing
Domino, ADSM, Web, a different ERP package and missed your growth
projections also. After all, it takes 6 years to amortize. Who WILLINGLY
doesn't upgrade in that amount of time?

Hi,

We are presently considering updating our development machine to V5R1, but
there are some possible problems ahead.

We have to support local production machines which run from V3R2M0 (CICS)
to V5R1, so we have to cater for all.

Upgrading the old machines is not an option (for monetary reasons of
course).

Does anybody know whether it is possible to install additional RPG, RPGLE
and CL compilers on a V5R1 box, so that you can compile for releases prior
to V4R4M0?

Thanks in advance.
