*sagging shoulders*

// begin of subroutines
mysub begsr;
// do some stuff

how does one know what is a comment and what is code? I am guessing the //
starts a comment, but why does the comment end and the code start again at
mysub begsr"?

I wouldn't sweat trying to learn where the subroutine name begins in RPGILE
versus RPG400. As soon as you get used to that you'll stumble upon:

/free
exsr mysub;
*inlr=*on;
return;
// begin of subroutines
mysub begsr;
// do some stuff
endsr;
/end-free

but here you might be able to sneak by searching for 'mysub begsr'
