The ability to recreate physical files without the need to copy the data out and back, delete logicals and recreate etc etc was put on the CHGPF command several releases ago. I suspect this may have been done by IBM in readiness for all the file changes that would be required because of Y2K. All you need to do is CHGPF FILE(mylib/myfile) SRCFILE(mysrclib/mysrcfil). Even so, IBM still recommend saving the data first before issuing the command.
