In this case, you have no real choice but to either do as Barbara said (which I alluded to earlier) and overlay a character field over one of the correct definition and then substring into the char and move out of the numeric. Alternative to substring (and the one I'd use) is to use a based field and set the pointer based on the field's offset in the buffer. Now that I know you're doing XML stuff, I seem to recall that someone published a utility a while back that did what you want except it output it in comma delimited format I think.
