Jim...

Lets say I'd like to create a "subfile"-like list in VB. I want a
screen layout like this:

Product Code Description of Product Quantity Price Error Messages
------------ ---------------------- -------- ----- ----------------

Now, product code, quantity and price all have to be changable by the
user. Description and Error Messages can't be changed by the user.
There needs to be a way to scroll through a list of up to 500 items,
including blank lines for new items to be added.

How the heck would you do this in VB? A listbox won't work, since you
can't change the data in a listbox. a grid control might work, but I'm
not sure that I'd be able to make some fields changable and some not.

I could look for the focus to hit a certain cell on a grid, the overlay
that spot with a textbox, but that'd be a WHOLE LOT more programming
than a subfile, and would require a lot of experience writing things.

So how would I do this in VB? And would it really be easier than a
subfile? (I'm still using VB 4.0, but I could upgrade... but when I
do, which control would I use? Even in 4.0, theres a lot of choices,
and I'm not really sure which one is right!)

How would you do it in C++?? Last I checked, screen I/O (much less
scrolling lists) weren't even part of the C++ standard. Or are you
talking about Visual C++, specifically?

If you have a suggestion, I'd almost certainly use it! But, at
least in my little world, it's easier to use subfiles.
