Numerous APIs have arguments (or bytes within structures) which are bit significant. Bitwise operations are ideal for setting or getting these bits. But Scott also brings up another important point: for setting bits, it is desirable to be able to have more than two operands. If new BIFs (or obviously the infix notation) support a variable number of operands, then it would be a definite improvement over the MI builtins.
