Just to add to this, the scanners we have used plugged into a 3477 keyboard
socket
and were quite transparant to the system (this is in addition to a keyboard).

Typically, configuration barcodes are supplied with the device which are used to
control which barcode types (one or more) the reader will register plus any
additional
control characters such as Enter to be included.

The user would use the keyboard up until they go to the point ready to scan &
would
then simply use the scanner instead. The data would appear in the input field on
the
screen as if the user had typed it themselves.
