RE: Is this the Free-Format that we asked for?

When I write C, I sometimes end up with really long lines.  I find that it
is much easier to hit return at some place of my choosing in the line
instead of having to scroll the far distant end.  If one uses a newline to
determine statement end, long lines are necessary for statements using
qualified or compound names, long or complex parameter strings, and long
literals typed into the line -- that sort of thing.

There are some limited cases where it is handy to put more than one
statement on a line - like the C "for" statement for ( ~~~; ~~~; ~~~) {};

That is why I think that the semicolon is needed.
