If the language is true free-format then a statement delimiter IS
needed.

The other option is to use the record as the statement delimiter and use
a continuation character when you need to span multiple lines.

I prefer the ';' but others may not.  It can be abused to cram code
together but sometimes it may make more sense

ex:

  a=0;  b=0;  c=0;  d=0;   // reset counters
