One answer to this is to put a "version ID" on the data structure.  When you
read a different version ID than you expect, call a "version upgrade"
program to convert to the new version.

Compiling with FIXDECERR (RPG IV) might help, but I rather have code to
manipulate data rather than an unseen hand.
