I'd thought about this.  Since many different programs use this file the 
field has many different uses and it isn't possible to predict the 
location of the decimal fields.  That is why i was looking for a way to 
gracefully recover from the error condition.  It is a rare occurrence, and 
happens only when a programmer adds a numeric field to an existing data 
structure.

Booth,

It sounds like the real problem is the existing database records. You 
could
just write a program to insert zeros (initialize) into the correct 
positions
of the existing records. Then, the data decimal error should go away.
