Hi Sean,

Welcome to RPG! You've hit upon the solution -- use RPG IV. In RPG III
fields have a maximum size of 256; in RPG IV, it's something like 32KB.

If you're forced to use RPG III, try to talk whoever's forcing you to use it
into using RPG IV. If that fails, the workaround is to define multiple
256-byte fields, or if you're just trying to create a data structure with a
length of 801 bytes, you can specify it on the DS line:

    IDSNAME      DS                            801

You don't have to define every single position of the data structure, just
the ones you're interested in accessing.

Another workaround was to define a large subfield as an array of 1-byte
elements.
