Wow.... when my reply to Mr. Paris was made, I never dreamed that it would fill this mailing list with people arguing about whether or not Code/400 is good or not. IMHO, thats completely aside from the point! We don't have to choose one or the other, SEU or Code/400 (or CodeStudio or Flex/Edit)! The point is, if IBM says "we're no longer developing SEU" its going to mean that in 2 or 3 releases, they'll stop distributing it, too. Then it'll cease to exist... When I'm out in our production facility, and I find some minor bug in my code, right now I can log onto a green screen terminal, fix the code and recompile. Without SEU, I'm walking/driving back to my office... When I'm at a user's PC, and they notice something thats not quite right with a program, I can simply sign on to the AS/400 with their standard emulator, make a quick change and recompile... Now, apparently, I'll have to install Code/400 everywhere I want to do that. My primary workstation (i.e. the computer on my desk) is currently running FreeBSD w/Gnome under XFree86. Now apparently, I have no choice but to run Windows to edit things!?! In no way am I suggesting that Code/400 be removed -- all I'm asking is that SEU not be abandoned. If you prefer your graphical editor, go for it! I'm more productive in SEU, and I don't want to see it dropped. When we no longer can use green screen terminals to use the AS/400, and it has become nothing more than a fancy, expensive (and not particularly flexible) attachment for our PC's, there'll be no reason to buy an AS/400 anymore. At that point, we might as well set up a UNIX or Windows NT server instead! Cheaper, much more software available, etc. For those of you who are just itching to tell me I'm wrong, (or that I won't use power tools?!) Think to yourself: "What would I do if _my_ favorite development tool was going to be discontinued?" +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
