Oh dear, just as i clicked the send button I noticed the 'NUMERIC'
word in the subject.

This is indeed a tricky one.

Best way is to either add a character version of the phone number
field (leftjustified excluding leading zeros) or,
try every combination of the number in all positions e.g.

If number 708 entered (in alpha numeric field)

Do a SETLL with 708  (trailing zeros)
READ checking that resultant phone number read is not greater than the highest
version (as END in code below)

then do a SETLL with 0708 (trailing zeros)
READ checking that resultant phone number read is not greater than the highest
version (as END in code below)

then do a SETLL with 00708 (trailing zeros)
READ checking that resultant phone number read is not greater than the highest
version (as END in code below)

etc etc

Personally I would use 2 separate alpha fields - one for the area code and the
other
for the actual phone number.
