You can copy your flat file to another phisical file with only one field 
with the same size of the flat file field with *nochk. After that into RPG 
program You migth creat a DS (data structure) with the lay-out of the flat 
file field (it's not necessary to be separeted with blanks). When You read 
the new file (came from flat one), You need to move the field to this DS, 
and then You be able to manipulate each specific subfield as your wish.
